Marcel Henkel's main field of interest is international trade and economic geography. In his job market paper he analyzes the role of urbanization in the development of wage inequality. Marcel Henkel joined the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics and the University Duisburg-Essen in October 2012. His supervisors are Prof. Dr. Tobias Seidel and Prof. Dr. Jens Südekum.

Matthias Westphal studied economics at the University of Münster and the University of Duisburg-Essen and joined the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics in October 2013. In February 2018, he received his PhD with the thesis entitled “Individual Consequences and Public Challenges of Social Change – Six Empirical Essays in Health Economics and Economics of Education”. In this thesis, he applied cutting-edge microeconometric identification techniques to answer highly policy relevant questions. For instance, in one of his papers, he uncovered the side effects of the educational expansion on the labor market of teachers. So far, he published three papers of his dissertation in the Journal of Health Economics and the Journal of the European Economics Association.
