Stiftung Mercator awards 12 scholarships to RGS Econ
The Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ) has been awarded a major research grant by the private foundation “Stiftung Mercator”. Starting from October 2015, Stiftung Mercator will provide scholarships for a total of up to 12 students entering RGS Econ’s three-year PhD program in Economics in the years 2015, 2016 and 2017. Four out of the nine graduate students entering the program in October 2015 will already be supported via Stiftung Mercator scholarships. Additionally, Stiftung Mercator is providing funds for conferences, workshops, and other supporting activities, amounting to a total grant of 597,000 euros.
This grant is the second that RGS Econ has received from Stiftung Mercator, following the 2012 grant supporting research focused on "The Economics of Migration and Integration", totaling 309,400 euros. The new grant is not focused on a particular research area. Nevertheless, one of the sponsorship’s goals is to raise students’ awareness of regional economic developments and challenges the Ruhr Area faces. This will be facilitated by a combination of workshops and guest lectures, also allowing for valuable input to students’ research, particularly in areas such as demographic and structural change, as well as regional, labor, and energy economics.
RGS Econ is a center for research and higher education in Economics. It was founded by three universities of the Ruhr Area (Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen), and by RWI, one of Germany‘s leading economic research institutes. Over a period of three years, graduate students receive guidance leading to a Ph.D. in economics complying with the highest international standards.
