RGS Welcome Tour 2013
On October 15th 2013 the 9th RGS-Cohort invited the new students at the RGS, that is the 10th cohort, to join the 'Welcome Tour'. This tour is traditionally organized for the new 'RGSians' to get to know their colleagues from the older cohorts - and in addition - to get some flavour of the cultural life in their new academic hometown Essen. This years destination was the cooking plant of the Zeche Zollverein, UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and probably the touristic landmark of the region. Here, the 22 students got to know how the raw coal was processed to be usable in the furnaces of the region. Anecdotes from the working men's life - recited at times in the local dialect of the Ruhrpott - spiced up the interesting scientific information about the functionality of one of the world's largest cooking plants.
After the guided tour old and new students from four different cohorts enjoyed the time to 'socialize' at a get-together in the Ampütte, a typical tavern where local foods and drinks are served.
