Economics of Education - International Workshop
The first international workshop "Economics of Education" took place at the Duisburg campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen on June 19-20, 2011. The workshop was jointly organised by the TU Dortmund, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics, and included researchers from the US, Spain, and Germany. The papers presented covered a wide range of topics and methodologies in the economics of education; including theoretical models on the effects of tuition fees, empirical analyses on ethnic segregation, and natural experiments on the effect of single-sex schooling. All presentations led to lively discussions, initiated by the discussants for each presentation. Speical thanks to the local organisers Prof. Wolfram Richter and Prof. Jens Südekum and their team. Their organising resulted in a flawless program and a workshop that was very well received by all participants. The conference dinner took place in the "Innenhafen" in Duisburg, showing that Duisburg has more to offer than just the university.
In addition to the workshop, Prof. Gerhard Glomm (Indiana University) also held a mini lecture for doctoral students on "Political economy of education" on the following two days at the RGS Econ. The lecture provided further insights for the participating graduate students and gave them the opportunity to further discuss research ideas with Prof. Glomm.
